Red Light Therapy: the complete guide

Red light therapy (also called photobiomodulation) is the controlled exposure of the skin and tissues to red light (630-660 nm) and near-infrared light (810-850 nm), wavelengths that mitochondria absorb and convert into more cellular energy (ATP). The result, documented in hundreds of clinical studies, is associated with firmer skin, faster muscle recovery, less inflammation, thicker hair and better sleep. This guide was written by the NeuroGenesis DNA team, the Romanian brand of red light therapy devices used at home, in clinics and in longevity centers, and explains exactly how it works, what the studies show and how to choose the right device.

Authors: Andra Manea, Co-Founder and CEO of NeuroGenesis DNA, nutrition and lifestyle medicine specialist (Harvard Medical School Executive Education), and Liliana Cristea, Co-Founder and CSO of NeuroGenesis DNA, psychologist and neuroscience researcher. What red light therapy is, in short

Red light therapy is a non-invasive treatment, free of UV and without aggressive heat, in which LEDs or low-power lasers emit red and infrared light directly onto the body. In the medical literature it is called photobiomodulation (PBM) or, in older studies, LLLT (low-level light therapy). NASA studied it in the 1990s for wound healing in astronauts, and today it is used in dermatology, sports medicine, physiotherapy and in everyday routines at home.

Three things set it apart from any other "light":

  • Precise wavelength. Only the 630-660 nm and 810-850 nm windows are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria. An ordinary red bulb does nothing.
  • Measured dose. The effect depends on irradiance (mW/cm²) and exposure time, not on the number of LEDs.
  • Systemic effect. Red light works at the surface (skin, collagen), while near-infrared penetrates 3-5 cm into muscles, joints and connective tissue.

How red light therapy works in the body

The mechanism is described in detail by Michael Hamblin, researcher at Harvard Medical School and the most cited author in the field (Hamblin, 2017, AIMS Biophysics). In essence:

  1. Photons reach the mitochondria. Cytochrome c oxidase, the enzyme in the respiratory chain, absorbs red and infrared light.
  2. Nitric oxide is released. The light detaches the nitric oxide that was blocking the enzyme, and cellular respiration resumes at full capacity. Blood vessels dilate and local circulation increases.
  3. The cell produces more ATP. More energy means fibroblasts that build more collagen, muscle cells that repair faster and hair follicles that stay longer in the growth phase.
  4. The anti-inflammatory signal switches on. Pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress go down, and blood flow goes up. One study on near-infrared light measured a 27% increase in blood flow after 5 minutes and 54% after 20 minutes.

Important: the effect is biphasic. The optimal dose gives results, while a double dose does not give double results, it cancels them (Huang and Hamblin, 2011, Dose-Response). That is why a good device has a known irradiance and a timer, and a proper session lasts 10-20 minutes, not an hour.

The wavelengths: 630, 660, 810, 850 nm

Wavelength Type Depth What it is used for
630-660 nm Visible red Skin, 1-2 mm Collagen, wrinkles, complexion, scars, hair
810-850 nm Near-infrared (NIR), invisible 3-5 cm Muscles, joints, recovery, inflammation, circulation
Red + NIR together Combined spectrum Superficial and deep The complete routine: skin plus recovery, used in all NeuroGenesis DNA panels

Blue light (415 nm) and yellow light (590 nm) appear in some LED masks and have a separate role: blue for acne, yellow for redness. They complement, but do not replace, red and infrared.

The benefits of red light therapy and what the studies show

Skin, wrinkles and collagen

The best-known controlled study, on 136 volunteers, showed after 30 sessions an ultrasound-measured increase in intradermal collagen density, fewer wrinkles and smoother skin, with 91% of participants satisfied with the result (Wunsch and Matuschka, 2014, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery). For the face, the right device is the NeuroGenesis DNA red light therapy mask, with 336 LEDs and 5 wavelengths, used 10 minutes a day.

Thicker hair

Two double-blind studies, in men and in women, measured a 35-37% increase in hair density versus placebo after 26 weeks of red light at 655 nm (Lanzafame, 2013; Lanzafame, 2014, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine). For the scalp we use the red light therapy helmet with 3 wavelengths.

Muscle recovery and athletic performance

A meta-analysis of studies on athletes concluded that photobiomodulation applied before exercise increases the number of repetitions to exhaustion and reduces markers of muscle fatigue (creatine kinase) after training (Leal-Junior, 2015, Lasers in Medical Science). That is why athletes use the panel before, not only after, training. This is what the NeuroGenesis DNA red light therapy panels and the MAT 360 mat are designed for.

Joint pain and inflammation

A meta-analysis published in BMJ Open, covering 22 randomized studies on knee osteoarthritis, showed that light therapy at the recommended dose reduces pain significantly compared with placebo, and the effect lasts for weeks after the final session (Stausholm, 2019, BMJ Open). For the neck, shoulders and back there is the red light therapy vest, and for targeted areas the CORE MINI 60.

Blood sugar and metabolism

A study from University College London showed that 15 minutes of 670 nm light on the back, before a meal, reduced the blood glucose peak by 27.7% in healthy people (Powner and Jeffery, 2024, Journal of Biophotonics). It is one of the most interesting recent results for longevity.

Vision and retinal ageing

The same laboratory showed that 3 minutes of 670 nm light in the morning improved contrast sensitivity by up to 20% in people over 40 (Shinhmar and Jeffery, 2020, Journals of Gerontology). For the eye area we have the red light eye patch with microcurrent.

Sleep and melatonin

In elite female athletes, 30 minutes of red light in the evening, for 14 days, increased melatonin levels and sleep quality as measured by a standardized questionnaire (Zhao, 2012, Journal of Athletic Training). Unlike the blue light of screens, red light does not suppress melatonin.

Brain and mental clarity

Near-infrared light applied transcranially is being studied for cognitive function, mood and recovery after mild trauma; the mechanism is the same, more ATP and better circulation, this time in neurons (Hamblin, 2016, BBA Clinical). This is the field NeuroGenesis DNA explores in its Mind Performance program.

Red light, stress, calm and the circadian rhythm

Section written by Liliana Cristea, psychologist and neuroscience researcher, Co-Founder and CSO of NeuroGenesis DNA.

The brain reads light as a clock and as a safety signal. The blue and cold white light of screens and household LEDs tells the nervous system it is daytime: cortisol stays high, melatonin is delayed, and the body stays in alert mode. Red light sends the opposite message. It is the wavelength of sunset, of fire and of the oil lamp, the only light humans sat under in the evening for thousands of years. That is why our nervous system associates it with slowing down, with safety and with preparing for sleep.

What the research shows:

  • Circadian rhythm. Unlike blue light, red light does not suppress melatonin in the evening. In Zhao's study (2012), 30 minutes of red light before bed increased melatonin and improved sleep quality. Figueiro and colleagues showed that red light can support alertness at night without blocking melatonin, which makes it suitable for the evening (Figueiro, 2009, BMC Neuroscience).
  • Stress and mood. Near-infrared light applied to the forehead, over the prefrontal cortex, has been associated in pilot studies with lower anxiety and depression scores at 2 and 4 weeks after the sessions (Schiffer, 2009, Behavioral and Brain Functions; Cassano, 2018, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery). The mechanism is the same as in the rest of the body: more ATP in neurons, more cerebral circulation, less inflammation, in a region of the brain that tires first under chronic stress.
  • Calm through the body. Ten minutes in front of a panel or lying on the mat, with the gentle warmth of infrared on your back, activates the parasympathetic nervous system: breathing slows, the neck muscles relax, the heart rate comes down. It is a ritual, not just a therapy, and the nervous system learns through repetition: same time, same light, same signal of "you are safe, you can slow down".

My recommendation for those living with chronic stress: red light in the evening, between 8 and 10 pm, with screens off, 10-15 minutes, as the last step before sleep. For mental clarity and mood, the nose and ear device brings red light closer to the brain, and compact panels such as the CORE 120 are used on the forehead and the back of the neck. Red light supports the nervous system and complements, without replacing, psychotherapy or the treatment recommended by a specialist.

How long a session lasts and how often

  • Duration: 10-20 minutes per area. Mask: 10 minutes. Body panel: 10-15 minutes per side, at 15-30 cm distance.
  • Frequency: 4-7 days a week at the start, then 3-4 for maintenance.
  • When results appear: energy and sleep, in 1-2 weeks; pain and recovery, 2-4 weeks; skin and wrinkles, 4-8 weeks; hair, 16-26 weeks.
  • Time of day: morning for energy and performance, evening for relaxation and sleep. Both work.
  • On clean skin, without sunscreen or make-up, which block the light.

How to choose a device: do not count the LEDs

The number of LEDs is the most used marketing argument and the least relevant one. What matters:

  1. Real wavelengths: 630/660 nm and 810/850 nm, specified and, ideally, measured.
  2. Irradiance at the distance of use: above 60-100 mW/cm² at 15 cm for a body panel. Below that value, the session has to be extended considerably.
  3. Coverage area: a 90 cm panel covers the torso; 180 cm covers the whole body in a single session.
  4. Flicker-free and low EMF: flickering sources tire the eyes and the nervous system.
  5. Timer, stand and app: to keep the dose consistent.
  6. Warranty and local service. NeuroGenesis DNA offers a 2-year warranty, 14-day returns and support in Romania on WhatsApp.

Safety, contraindications and side effects

Red light therapy is considered safe, UV-free, painless, with more than 30 years of studies behind it. NeuroGenesis DNA devices are CE certified. Common-sense recommendations:

  • Do not look directly into the LEDs; use the protective goggles included with the large panels.
  • Ask your doctor if you are pregnant, have an active oncological condition, photosensitive epilepsy or take photosensitizing medication.
  • Do not apply on fresh tattoos or open wounds without medical advice.
  • Results are gradual and depend on consistency. Red light therapy supports the body's natural processes and complements, without replacing, medical treatment.

Red light therapy in Romania: at home, in clinics and in longevity centers

In Romania, red light therapy first appeared in aesthetic and physiotherapy clinics, at 150-300 RON per session. Since 2024, more and more people choose a device for home, which pays for itself in 5-10 sessions. NeuroGenesis DNA, a Romanian company founded by Andra Manea and Liliana Cristea, equips homes, clinics, salons and wellness hotels alike, organizes longevity education events and works with a medical team coordinated by Prof. Dr. Dan Mircea Enescu. If you would like to see the devices in action, write to us on WhatsApp at 0723 299 339.

Frequently asked questions about red light therapy

Does red light therapy really work?

Yes, within the limits of the correct dose and consistency. More than 200 randomized clinical studies, on more than 9,000 participants, document effects on skin, hair, pain and muscle recovery. Results are gradual, not instant.

What is the difference between red light and infrared?

Red light (630-660 nm) is visible and works in the skin. Near-infrared (810-850 nm) is invisible and penetrates into muscles and joints. Good devices combine both.

How much does a red light therapy device cost?

A portable device or a mask starts at 480-900 RON. A body panel costs between 1,200 and 5,000 RON, and professional full-body systems between 8,000 and 22,000 RON. A clinic session costs 150-300 RON, so a home device pays for itself quickly.

Can it be used daily?

Yes. The standard protocol is 10-20 minutes per area, 4-7 days a week, then maintenance 3-4 times a week.

Does red light tan or burn the skin?

No. It contains no UV and does not cause burns. The sensation is one of gentle warmth.

Does it help with weight loss?

Red light is not a weight-loss method. Studies show effects on glucose metabolism and on recovery, which can support an exercise and nutrition program.

Is red light therapy the same as a tanning bed or the infrared light in a sauna?

No. Tanning beds use UV. Infrared saunas use far infrared, which heats the body. Red light therapy uses red and near-infrared light, absorbed directly by the mitochondria, without deep heating.

Where can I buy a red light therapy device in Romania?

Directly from NeuroGenesis DNA, at neurogenesisdna.ro, with delivery across Romania, cash on delivery or instalments, a 2-year warranty and local support.
