Near infrared (810-850 nm) applied to the joint for 10-15 minutes a day is associated in meta-analyses with a significant reduction of pain in osteoarthritis, tendinitis and neck pain, through lower inflammation and increased local circulation. Unlike anti-inflammatory drugs, the effect builds up over time and lasts after the sessions stop.

What the studies show

Stausholm and colleagues published in 2019 in BMJ Open a meta-analysis of 22 randomised, placebo controlled trials on knee osteoarthritis. The conclusion: light therapy at the dose recommended by the World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy reduces pain significantly compared with placebo, and the effect persists for up to 12 weeks after the last session. Trials with doses below the threshold showed no effect, which confirms how important the right dose is.

For chronic neck pain, a Cochrane review and the Chow meta-analysis (2009, The Lancet) showed pain reduction immediately after treatment and at 22 weeks. For tendinopathies, Bjordal and colleagues documented the anti-inflammatory effect and pain reduction at doses of 2-6 J per point.

How red light reduces pain

  1. It lowers pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1, IL-6) and raises anti-inflammatory ones, a mechanism described by Hamblin (2017).
  2. It increases local circulation through the release of nitric oxide, so the tissue receives oxygen and clears inflammation by-products.
  3. More ATP in cartilage and tendon cells, which supports repair.
  4. It modulates pain transmission at the level of the nerve endings.

The protocol for joints

  • Knee, elbow, shoulder: CORE MINI 60 or CORE 300, at 5-15 cm, 10 minutes on each side of the joint, daily for 3-4 weeks, then 3-4 times a week.
  • Neck and shoulders: red light vest with 165 LEDs, 15 minutes, ideally in the evening after work.
  • Lower back and back: MAT 360 mat, lying on it for 15-20 minutes.
  • Several areas, athletes: a 90-180 cm panel from the panel range, 10-15 minutes per side.

Who it is suited for

For anyone with wear related joint pain, neck pain from desk work, recovery after exercise or after a minor injury, and for people over 50 who want to stay active. Red light supports the natural repair processes and complements, without replacing, physiotherapy or the treatment recommended by your doctor. For acute, unexplained pain or pain with significant swelling, see a doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does the pain decrease?

Many people notice an improvement after 1-2 weeks of daily sessions. Studies measure the effect at 4-8 weeks, and the benefit is maintained after stopping.

Can I use red light together with anti-inflammatory drugs?

Yes, red light does not interact with medication. Still, talk to your doctor about any change in your treatment.

Which device for the knee?

CORE MINI 60 or CORE 300, held 5-15 cm from the joint, 10 minutes on each side. For several joints, a 90 cm panel.
